Here you will find background information on this splendid series - how it came into being and how long it ran for and you will also be able to purchase them via the sales catalogue. Here you will also be able to see today’s prices for those rare issues and you may well find that you wished that you had kept and cherished them all those years ago, if you once owned them.
Here you will find many of the titles for sale and all the titles produced listed - there are 12 of them. This series was originally produced by the Amex corporation in the ‘forties and ‘fifties and the artwork is in a very stylish red and black with a stiff card cover. Later the series was re-produced by Baird Books in black and white with new cover artwork, using a softer cover and re-titled Famous Stories in Pictures. The series provided some competition for the more well-known series, Classics Illustrated (see www.classicsillustrated.co.uk ) and was the first British attempt at adapting classic fiction into comic book form (followed swiftly, and more successfully, by Thriller Picture Library (see www.thrillerpicturelibrary.co.uk ). The series didn’t flourish and although more issues were planned none appeared but they are charming in their own distinctive way and provide an interesting alternative to the issues produced by Classics Illustrated as well as two titles not produced in that series - Henry V and Barnaby Rudge.
